Hydrofracturing

Enhancing Subsurface Fluid Flow

About

Hydraulic Fracturing

Hydrofracturing, commonly referred to as hydraulic fracturing, is a technique employed to enhance the permeability of rock formations, thereby improving the extraction of subsurface fluids such as water.

This method involves injecting fluid at high pressure into targeted rock layers, creating fractures that facilitate the flow of these resources into a wellbore for efficient extraction.

The process

The Hydrofracturing Process: A Step-by-Step Overview

The hydrofracturing process is meticulously planned and executed to ensure optimal results:

  1. Well Preparation: a borehole is drilled into the target rock formation.  This well is typically cased with materials like steel or PVC to maintain structural integrity and prevent contamination.

  2. Packer Installation: packers, which are sealing devices, are inserted into the well to isolate specific sections of the borehole.  This isolation ensures that the pressurised fluid is directed precisely to the desired zones.

  3. Injection of Water: water is pumped into the isolated section at high pressure.  This pressure exceeds the rock's natural tensile strength, causing it to fracture.

  4. Flowback & Production: after fracturing, some of the injected fluid returns to the surface, known as flowback.  The well is then ready for production, allowing the targeted fluids to flow more freely into the wellbore.

The Reasons

Purpose & Applications of Hydrofracturing

The primary objective of hydrofracturing is to increase the yield of wells by improving the connectivity and permeability of rock formations.  This technique is particularly beneficial in:

  • Water Wells: enhancing the flow rate in low-yielding wells drilled into crystalline bedrock or other low-permeability formations.
  • Geothermal Energy: improving the efficiency of geothermal systems by increasing the permeability of hot dry rock formations, facilitating the circulation of fluids necessary for heat extraction.

Weighing it up

Advantages & Potential Risks of Hydrofracturing

Advantages:

  • Increased Resource Recovery: hydrofracturing can significantly boost the productivity of wells, making previously uneconomical resources accessible.
  • Economic Benefits: enhanced extraction rates can lead to increased revenues and energy independence.
  • Technological Advancements: modern hydrofracturing techniques have evolved to be more efficient and environmentally conscious.

Potential Risks:

  • High Pressure: due to the nature of the works, high pressures are involved.

Igne ensures all equipment used in this process is properly rated and is inspected prior to use.

Essential Equipment & Challenges in Hydrofracturing

The successful implementation of hydrofracturing requires specialised equipment, which Igne has in house.

  • High-Pressure Pumps: to inject fracturing fluids at the necessary pressures to fracture the rock formations.
  • Monitoring Instrumentation: to assess pressure, flow rates, and other critical parameters in real-time, ensuring the process remains within designed specifications.

Challenges:

  • Geological Variability: differences in rock properties can affect fracture propagation and the overall success of the operation.
  • Water Usage: hydrofracturing operations can require substantial water volumes. Igne can ensure a suitable supply is available on site.
  • Regulatory Compliance: navigating the complex landscape of environmental regulations requires expertise and diligence to ensure all operations meet legal standards.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Hydrofracturing

What is hydrofracturing?

Hydrofracturing, also known as hydraulic fracturing, is a technique used to enhance the flow of fluids such as water, oil, or natural gas from rock formations.  This process involves injecting a high-pressure water into the rock to create fractures, thereby increasing permeability and facilitating the extraction of these resources.

How does hydrofracturing differ from traditional development methods?

Traditional development methods involve creating a direct pathway to access subsurface resources.  In contrast, hydrofracturing specifically aims to increase the permeability of rock formations by creating fractures, allowing for a more efficient flow of resources into the wellbore

What fluids are used in the hydrofracturing process?

The fracturing fluid consist of water only.

Is hydrofracturing safe for the environment?

Yes as only water is used by Igne.

What are the benefits of hydrofracturing?

Hydrofracturing enhances can improve the yield of water wells in low-permeability rock formations.
